Senior Dogs Are Already Housebroken
Let’s face it: coming home to a mess is never fun, but with a senior dog, you typically won’t have to worry about this since older dogs are already housebroken.
“Older dogs generally do not have as much of an issue with house training and chewing and they generally have less energy, so in some ways it’s easier to bring them into the household,” says Robin Bennett, a certified professional dog trainer.
If you bring home an older dog who isn’t fully housebroken, Bennett recommends house training an older dog like you would a puppy. She advises maintaining a consistent schedule of feeding and taking your dog out, taking your dog out more frequently so he has the opportunity to go in the right place and then either supervising him or confining him to a crate when you’re gone.
