Take the Stairs
An easy way to give your dog regular exercise inside is to call her up and down the stairs several times, says Ward. Exercise that make dogs engage their large muscle masses as much as possible will help them stay fit, no matter how simple the movement is, says Ward. You don’t even have to run up and down the stairs yourself—stand at the top of the stairs and toss a toy down stairs for your dog to chase. When your dog grabs the toy, call her back up the stairs and start over.
To help motivate your dog to take the stairs repeatedly, you can also dole out green, leafy, crunchy vegetables as low-cal treats, including small pieces of zucchini, broccoli, spinach, and celery, Ward says. “I rarely find a dog that doesn’t like them.”
