Prince William Forest Park
This 15,000-acre national park just 40 minutes south of Alexandria boasts 37 miles of hiking trails as well as 21 miles of bike paths.
Dogs are welcome on all the park’s trails as long as they’re on a leash, says Chris Alford, the chief of interpretation and education at Prince William Forest Park. The hiking trails that follow the park’s two creeks are especially popular with dog owners thanks to their diversity of wildlife, habitat and scenery, he says.
Prince William Forest Park also hosts a regular “paws in the park” event that features presentations from local vendors and dog rescues, as well as the area’s working dog groups.
A heads up, however: during the summer the park sees a (pardon the pun) uptick in ticks.
“We always recommend that everyone check themselves and their pets after each visit,” says Alford.
