“When pets are socialized in a positive, controlled and safe setting, most of them will become more comfortable with a wide variety of situations,” Lund says.
Make a resolution to go for a hike with another dog owner, sign up for a group training class, schedule a session at doggie daycare or explore neighborhood dog parks. Socializing your dog in these ways will decrease their stress levels and improve their social skills, Lund says.
However, Woodard cautions that some pets, like some people, might prefer spending time alone.
“If your pets are shy or lack social skills, sometimes [social] activities might be too stressful,” she says. If your pet falls into this category, consider taking them on a quieter, solo adventure.
