Try Leash Training
If your cat is the adventurous sort, consider taking her out for a walk on a leash. Leash training will allow your cat to safely enjoy cool weather, watch the birds fly south and sniff the refreshing air.
Leash training can be a good activity for confident, outgoing cats, says dog and cat behavior consultant Arden Moore. “You need to know your cat’s true temperament,” she adds.
If you cat is up for an outdoor adventure, Moore recommends getting her used to leash walking in stages by first putting a cat-designed harness and leash near her food bowl or bed to sniff and explore. Once your cat is familiar with the harness, Arden recommends doing some short trial runs while she is tethered in the house, offering praise and treats throughout.
When you’re ready to head outside, begin your walks in a secure area, like a fenced-in yard or porch, Arden says.
“If you go for a walk on the sidewalk, time the walk when dogs are usually notout for their walks to reduce the risk of an unfriendly encounter,” she says.
