Recognized by their distinctive ears, which curl backwards, the American Curl began in California in the 1980s.
“A woman was ‘found’ by a stray cat who had ears that curled back,” Werber said. “When it gave birth to a litter soon after, two of the kittens also developed the same curled back ears. Recognizing this unique characteristic could form the basis of a new breed, the woman and a friend undertook the necessary research and breeding protocols to establish and safeguard the breed’s genetic health.”
American Curls are known for being gentle, friendly and even-tempered. Active and affectionate, Curls are found in a variety of colors and can be both long and shorthaired.
