When the mouth-watering aroma of holiday baking wafts through the house and your dog comes running to the kitchen sniffing the air, it can be temping to share a bit of your baked goods. However, many of the foods we enjoy this time of year, such as raisins, chocolate and nutmeg, can be fatal to our dogs.
Instead, opt for these safe gingerbread cookies. These treats are easy to make and I love using a cookie stamp to create adorable little men—although I don’t think my dogs care about the shape.
- 2 tbsp molasses
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup chunky peanut butter
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 2 tsp ginger
Preheat your oven to 320 degrees Fahrenheit
In a large bowl whisk together the molasses, egg and peanut butter.
Add the wholemeal flour, cinnamon and ginger to the wet ingredients.
Knead to form a stiff dough. If the dough is too dry, add additional peanut butter one tablespoon at a time. If the dough is too wet, add additional flour one tablespoon at a time.
On a lightly-floured table or work surface, roll out the dough to 5mm thick. Use a cookie cutter or stamp to create your favorite shaped treats and place them on a baking sheet.
Bake the gingerbread treats in the oven for about 15 minutes, or until lightly golden.
Allow to cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheet before removing to a rack to completely cool.
Store them in an airtight container to keep them fresh and tasty.
Storage tip: This cookie dough freezes well. Store it in a plastic bag or other container. Press out as much air as possible and it will last for up to three months in the freezer.
